Where Does the Light Go? (2013)

 

An underground journey into the subconscious rooms of memories and dreams.

”Does a performance always present everything as the truth, or reveal a lie to the spectator?”

​

The performance creates an fragmentary immersive walk-trough world out of the subliminal; of uncontrolled layers of memories, dreams and shadows, with vividly visual and surreal details. The scenes and events take place in physically separate spaces in which real rooms exist alongside imaginary ones. Each space brings a different perspective of memories, dreams and fantasy in relation to the performance happening in the moment. Part installation, part dance piece, the work is constructed from the interaction of dance, immersive theatre, surreal stage design, video and film projections, text and music.

The material for the performance Where Does the Light Go? draws upon the artists’ own childhood memories.

”Memory has no chronology. I often find myself trying to analyze childhood emotions and memories that have survived only as fragmentary flashes, no matter how hard I try to return to them. What if one didn’t strive to recreate the truth, but would uninhibitedly exaggerate, paraphrase and plagiarize?” -VR

NOTE: The performance is not suitable for the disabled or children. The audience will need to walk and stand during the performance, and the performance space has stairs, high thresholds and slippery floor areas. The temperature of the performance space is approximately 15° C. The space does not have WC facilities.

”Väittääkö esitystilanne kaiken kuitenkin totena, vai paljastaako katsojalle valheen?”

​

Esitys luo fragmentaarisen immersiivisen maailman tiedostamattomasta; muistojen, unien ja varjojen kontrolloimattomista kerroksista, joiden surrealistiset yksityiskohdat ovat voimakkaasti visuaalisia. Kohtaukset ja tapahtumat sijoittuvat fyysisesti eri tiloihin, joissa todellisten huoneiden rinnalla ovat uneksitut huoneet. Jokainen tila ristivalottaa muistoja, unia ja fantasiaa eri suhteessa nyt-hetkessä tapahtuvaan esitykseen. Installaation ja tanssiesityksen välimaastoon sijoittuva teos rakentuu tanssin, immersiivisen teatterin, surrealististen lavastuselementtien, video- ja filmiprojisointien, tekstin sekä elävän ja tallenteelta esitetyn musiikin vuoropuhelusta.

Mihin valo katoaa? -esityksen materiaalina ovat työryhmän omat lapsuusmuistot.

”Muistilla ei ole kronologiaa. Huomaan usein yrittäväni eritellä lapsuuteni tunteita ja muistikuvia, jotka yrityksestä huolimatta ovat kuitenkin säilyneet vain hajanaisina välähdyksinä. Entä jos ei pyrkisikään totuuteen, vaan lähtisi liioittelemaan, lainaamaan ja varastamaan estotta?” -VR
